Task 1.1-prelims
For part of the planning we must film prelims in order to ensure we understand specific music video conventions. I have included 2 Professional examples and Below i will include my own attempts of me lip syncing to an independent artist.
The examples I included come from TV shows that feature lip syncs as an essential part of the programme. The example on the left is from the hugely successful Rupauls Drag Race. In this competition show a collection of drag queens must compete through various challenges to prove they are "America's next drag Superstar", through these challenges

Another element of the prelims is a filmed dance routine to music from the same or a different independent artist, again I have included videos of professional examples that can help me with my own attempts at the dance routines.

Task 1.2-media language analysis
Postmodernism – Jean Baudrillard
The idea that in postmodern culture the boundaries between the ‘real’ world and the world of the media have collapsed and that it is no longer possible to distinguish between reality and simulation.The idea that in a postmodern age of simulacra we are immersed in a world of images which no longer refer to anything ‘real’.The idea that media images have come to seem more ‘real’ than the reality they supposedly represent (hyper reality). Post modernism is explored in 'Water Guns' as Todrick hall, the director of the video, references both elements of modern culture and combines it with elements taken from 'The Wizard of Oz' written by L.Frank Baum. Hall combines these realities by giving the Emerald citizens in Oz the same treatment and history as the Black American Population in America. Hall combines this similarity with the image of "Water guns" as it relates to the wicked witch of the wests death and likens it to guns in the real world, alluding to police brutality and gun violence as an issue in general. This is further alluded to with the inclusion of the phrases 'We are Orlando' and 'RIP Trayvon' along with the inclusion of youtube star , 'Christina Grimmie', name who was shot and killed two days before the video was to start production. By breaking the boundary between reality and stimulation, Hall successfully highlights the modern issues in America and follows in the footsteps of artists such as Beyonce (the same issues are explored Formation) Todrick Hall expertly uses elements of hyperreality to enforce ideas that the images presented are both artistic and a reflection of reality, whilst also contributing to the biographical musical, Straight outta Oz. Baudrillards theory of post modernism relates to the collapse in reality and media, the media images are seen as reality to the audience. By using the theme of Oz, Todrick Hall visually represents this theory as he highlights the aspects of reality through the Ozian people, which is not an aspect of the audiences reality. This leads them to connote the hidden meaning and purpose behind the song, building an audience audience and perspective of the video. "I didn't want to do it if there wasn't anything that I could add to the story," - Todrick Hall "I was thinking about how the Witch would be killed, and I was like, "Oh, we should make a play on that, and call them water guns." So when I wrote the song, I was thinking about things in the Trayvon Martin case. I wanted it to be a play on the Black Lives Matter movement. So I wrote the song, but I wanted to make it clear that I am not anti-police; I am anti-gun. I don't like gun violence. Not that anyone is pro-gun violence, but I wanted the song to feel like it's just about us all uniting as one, which is why I have the cops standing there in the song. The song is dedicated it to my friend Jill, because she was a cop who got killed.But I wrote the song, and then that night, in a horrible coincidence, Christina Grimmie was killed. We recorded it the next day, and our hearts were so heavy. We were all thinking about that, and it was a very emotional moment on set. And then we went home and found out about the Orlando situation. We almost didn't put that song in the show, and now I feel like it's one of the most important ones."-Todrick Hall |

MUSIC VIDEO;
The video will start with the 2 protagonists in a bedroom, both will be lip syncing the opening lines of the song ('A tornado flew around my room before you came,Excuse the mess it made') the couple will be a visual metaphor that matches the description of a tornado. The next frame will feature the 2 protagonists again, this time in a school environment, 1 of the protagonists is a jock and in this scene it is revealed that he has a girlfriend and a large group of friends, the other protagonist (who doubles as my artist)is a wallflower and is watching his boyfriend outside from a window. The artist will then lip sync the pre- chorus, whilst looking at his secret lover, whilst doing this, the jock will see him and they will exchange a glance that symbolizes that he also wishes he was with him. The next scene will focus on the jocks unhappy and deceptive relationship with his girlfriend and friends, as they begin to torment his boyfriend for not being like them due to his sexuality, he watches from the back but doesn't interject due to his status, this pains the artist and he blanks him and begins to ignore his calls and texts as he feels betrayed. this visual will overlap the second chorus (Or do you not think so far ahead? (Ahead), 'Cause I been thinkin' 'bout forever (ooh, ooh) x2). For the final verse, the artist and jock reconcile and talk (lip syncing the lyrics, adapted to look like a conversation) however it becomes an argument, during the argument the jocks girlfriend and friends enter and he ultimately chooses them over his relationship with the artist, both ending up unhappy with whats happened but unable to change it due to the jocks personal dishonesty. the final verse and chorus, will have the artist lip syncing the words as he again watches his,now, ex boyfriend from afar with an overwhelming sadness as nobody will ever know what they have had.
Throughout the video, small wizard of oz Easter eggs will be placed as to feed into the tornado visual. The artist will wear blues and reds, the jock will wear blacks and greens, the girlfriend will wear pinks, and the jock's friends will wear indigo and red to symbolise the citizens/creatures of oz. This will be furthered as other people featured will wear green in their outfits, with standout characters in the artists perspective (i.e A lab partner) wearing outfits that follow Dorothy's narrative ( such as the scarecrow, tinman, or cowardly lion)

RELATED PRODUCT:
The magazine will be a hybrid of Paper, Rolling Stone and Gay Times as they are relevant in pop culture and in the public eye frequently. The style of the magazines are also very artistic and versatile as they don't limit content variety. Similar to these, my artist will be the focus image or the magazine and will be wearing an outfit inspired by the wizard of Oz, on a glossy emerald green background. The theme of the article will follow this with linked images of my artist in different outfits inspired by the Wizard of Oz. The article will also include screenshots from the music video, with the article focusing on the artist and what message they are trying to enforce with the video. |
